Why are my YouTube views stuck, frozen or going backwards?!
There are 3 possibilities:
1. YouTube server capacity
2. YouTube traffic security
3. A YouTube system bug
1 – Server capacity
When a YouTube video goes from the dozens of views towards the hundreds of views and beyond, the view count responsibility is shifted over to a larger end server.
How long will it take for the server transition?
The server transition can take anywhere from 12-72 hours, but it can vary depending on things like the number of views being audited at the time, the audience retention so far etc.
Once this initial freeze has ended, you may not have a freeze happen to your video for quite a while, and maybe never again.
Why is the view count always a bit behind?
In general, it can take up to 2 or 3 days for your video’s view count to reflect the actual number of views it has. Views from many locations and viewing devices need to combine – that’s not a “freeze”, it’s just a “lag” and is always an issue every single day.
TIP: Always look on a pc/laptop for the most up-to-date view count!
If you check your video from a phone or tablet, the view count could be days behind. For some reason the general everyday display lag is much longer on mobile devices.
2 – Traffic security
As of September 2014 views audits became common practice on YouTube.
Initially it was mainly for videos found to be accumulating views very quickly, but now as of Q4 2015 a views audit can happen to any video at any time for no special reason.
During a views audit the view count will be frozen (ie YouTube views stuck!) or it may be reduced while some views are being checked.
Once the audit is complete (usually a week or so on average) the view count continues ticking over again, and all of the removed views found to be genuine should also be credited/returned to the view count.
Can I force YouTube to unfreeze my view count?
You can certainly try. A service like ours may help to decrease the time your video is audited for, due to our ability to generate real high retention views, and the genuine engagement signals from our social media networks.
If you can display to the algorithms that your views are real, that audience watch time is above average, and that the social signals are genuine, this will help ease the temporary restriction on your video’s view count.
3 – System bug
Since around Q4 of 2015 there have been many million YouTubers with their YouTube views stuck and/or disappearing (and sometimes suddenly re-appearing) on their videos.
The peak of this apparent bug in YouTube’s counting system was around early to mid December 2015, however according to many people it still remains an issue for some videos, and has been since mid October 2015.
